Alka Yagnik is one of the most famous Indian playback singers. She has been described as one of the most successful playback singer in Hindi cinema. She holds the record of having sung more than 2,450 songs with the career spanning more than three decades.
She was born on March 26, 1966 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India into a Gujarati family. Her father’s name was Dharmendra Shankar , and her mother’s name was Shubha Yagnik. Her mother was also a trained Indian classical singer.
Alka completed her schooling at a modern High school for girls in Kolkata ,India.
She was married to a shilling- based businessman named Neeraj kapoor in 1989, with whom She had a daughter named Syesha kapoor.
She started singing at a very young age. At the age of six, she started singing for Akashvani , All India Radio, Calcutta. She made her debut in Bollywood in 1979 by singing few lines in Rajshri’s song “Payal ki Jhankar”.
Her first solo track was “Hum Tum Rahenge” for Rajesh Roshan in Hamari Bahu Alka in 1982. Finally, she got her first break through the song “Ek Do Teen” from the movie Tezaab.
She not only sang in Urdu-Hindi but also in many other languages including Avadi, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, English, Gujarati, Bengali and Malayalam.
She has worked for many Indian composers, such as kalyani – Anandji and Sandesh shandilya. Throughout her career, she has sung for more than 1114 films. She has said to be the Fifth most legendry Bollywood singer of all time.
She has won many awards till now, like best female playback singer artist for “Ek Do Teen” in the year 1993, “Meri Mehbooba” in the year 1998, “Taal se Taal” in the year 2000, and many many more.
Besides Singing, She also judged several Indian shows on television, such as Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il champs and Indian Idol.
